Pet Aftercare Guide

How We Choose Providers

Every pet aftercare provider on this site has been reviewed by us before they appear. This page explains exactly how the review works, what we check, and what we will not compromise on. We publish this methodology because the families who use this site deserve to know how the recommendations they see were made.

The short version

For each US metro we cover, we look at every pet aftercare provider we can find. We narrow that list down to the three to five we would recommend to a friend in that city. The shortlist is based on transparent pricing, identification protocols, real local presence, and editorial judgment about who actually serves families well.

We do not feature every provider in a market. We do not accept payment to feature a provider. We do not move providers up the list based on affiliate commissions.

The three minimums

Before a provider can even be considered for a featured slot, they must clear three bars:

1. Transparent pricing

Either pricing is published on the provider’s website (the strongest signal), or the provider will quote a clear price by weight and service tier on a quick call without a high-pressure upsell. Providers who refuse to quote a price without an in-person appointment do not pass.

2. Identification and tracking

A provider offering private cremation must be able to answer the question “how do I know I’m getting my pet’s ashes back?” with specifics. Acceptable answers include physical ID tags that stay with the pet through the process, written chain-of-custody protocols, accredited industry membership (such as IAOPCC), or witness cremation availability. Vague answers do not pass.

3. Verifiable local presence

A real working address. A real phone number that a real person answers. Customer reviews dated within the current year. We confirm each of these directly. Listings that exist only as directory entries without an active web presence do not become featured.

What raises a provider in our review

Once the three minimums are met, we look for editorial reasons to feature one provider over another in a city:

  1. 1Weight-based pricing tables published openly, so families can know the exact cost before they call.
  2. 2Multiple service tiers (communal, semi-private, private, aquamation) so families have real choice.
  3. 3Bundled in-home euthanasia plus cremation through a single coordinator, when families want one team for both.
  4. 424/7 pickup availability for after-hours emergencies.
  5. 5Eco-friendly options like aquamation, especially in markets where that matters to families.
  6. 6Industry accreditation (such as IAOPCC, CAETA, or a Registered Pet Funeral Director on staff).
  7. 7Strong customer reviews that match the editorial story we are seeing in the research.

What disqualifies a provider

Any of these and a provider does not get featured, regardless of size or reputation:

  1. 1Closed or recently closed without public notice. We monitor this through Yelp closure flags, BBB complaints, and direct website checks.
  2. 2High-pressure upsell complaints in recent reviews.
  3. 3Demonstrated dishonesty about service type, for example advertising “private” cremation that turns out to be partitioned or communal in practice.
  4. 4No real phone or address.
  5. 5A pattern of poor handling reports (lost ashes, identity mistakes, delayed return without explanation).

What “featured” means and what it does not mean

Featured providers get the top placement on a city page. They are the ones we would recommend first.

We also list non-featured providers further down the page for completeness. These are providers that meet our minimums but did not make the top three to five for a given city, or that serve only a subset of the metro. A non-featured listing is not a warning. It just means we found a stronger fit for most families in that market.

Editorial independence and how affiliates fit in

Some of our featured providers are affiliate partners, meaning we receive a small commission if a family books with them through our links. This never determines whether a provider is featured. We feature providers that pass our review whether or not they pay us. Providers that pay us but do not pass our review do not appear.

Our internal admin tracks each provider’s affiliate status (active, pending, not available). These labels exist for accounting, not for editorial weighting. A pending or unavailable status has no effect on a provider’s placement.

How often we re-review

Every featured provider is re-reviewed twice a year for pricing, hours, coverage, and current customer reviews. We also update pages immediately when we receive a credible report from a family about a closure, price change, or service issue. Feedback always reaches a human at sunny.love.my.pets@gmail.com.

What we are not

We are not a directory aiming for completeness. We are not a paid placement engine. We are not anonymous reviewers with hidden incentives. We are pet owners trying to make this part of pet ownership less lonely and less confusing for everyone who comes after us.
