Pet Passages Review

The rare pet cremation brand that admits its 'Individual' cremation is not one pet alone, prices it separately from truly private, and guarantees the ashes back in 72 hours with a tracking number. Read the label carefully and the pickup fees even more carefully.

Pet Passages is a pet funeral home and cremation franchise with roughly 21 locations across 15 states. It sits between the small independent crematory and the national vet-channel operators: locations are individually owned, but they run a shared identification system, a shared training program and published price lists. The reason it is worth a review is a naming problem that runs through this whole industry, and Pet Passages is one of the few brands that handles it honestly.

What They Do Well

The single most useful thing Pet Passages does is refuse a piece of industry vocabulary. Across the pet cremation market, the word 'individual' is routinely used for a cremation where several pets share the chamber, separated by trays or dividers, with each family's remains returned separately. Many people read 'individual' and picture their pet alone. Pet Passages names this tier 'Semi-Private (aka Individual)', spells out on its own website that more than one animal is present in the chamber, and sells 'Truly Private' as a separate, more expensive option. At the Charlotte location that gap is real money: $155 semi-private against $280 truly private for a medium dog. Whether you want to pay it is your call. Being told what you are buying should not be remarkable, and in this industry it is.

The chain of custody is the strongest we have documented. Their Secure Passages system attaches a uniquely numbered stainless steel disc to your pet that stays with them throughout, scanned into their software at each handover, with a Pet Parent Gateway that lets you check status in real time. Families can attend the cremation, or request a recorded video of it. We cover how witnessed cremation works and what to ask for.

The return time is the fastest published guarantee we have found anywhere: 72 hours, three business days, from when they take your pet into their care. The industry norm is one to three weeks, and CodaPet's own network quotes two to three weeks. If waiting is the part you are dreading, this matters more than any price difference.

Every cremation includes the tracking system, a cremation certificate, and ink paw and nose print impressions as standard rather than as an upsell. Staff complete a mandatory hands-on training program and are certified as Pet Funeral Directors.

Where They Fall Short

Transport is billed separately and it is not small. At the Charlotte location, home pickup is $125 for a pet under 60 lbs and $225 over 60 lbs, rising to $250 and $350 after hours, with another $100 if you are outside the 20 mile service radius. A $280 truly private cremation for a medium dog is therefore $405 before tax if they collect your pet, and $505 if it happens at night. Return delivery is extra again: $60 by certified post, $100 for hand delivery. These are legitimate costs for a real service, but the advertised cremation price is roughly half of a realistic total, and you should build the pickup line into any comparison you make.

It is a franchise, so the price list we quote is one location's. Another Pet Passages may charge differently, keep different hours or offer different packages. Always open your own location's pricing page rather than assuming a national rate.

Coverage is thin. Roughly 21 locations across 15 states, with a footprint that overlaps only a handful of the metros where most families are searching. In much of the country the nearest Pet Passages is not a practical option.

Some packages are size-limited in ways that are easy to miss. Several urn packages show no price at all for large or extra-large pets, and the semi-private tier has no extra-large option in most packages, so owners of giant breeds have fewer choices than the price grid first suggests.

Pricing Deep Dive

Pet Passages franchises publish full price lists, which is unusual and welcome. The figures below are from the Charlotte, North Carolina location and are an example, not a national rate card. Check your own location's pricing page, and compare against local crematories using our pet cremation cost guide.

Basic package, ashes returned in an embroidered velvet pouch with paw and nose print and certificate:

  • Truly private: $250 small (0 to 20 lbs), $280 medium (21 to 65 lbs), $315 large (66 to 110 lbs), $345 extra large (111 to 225 lbs)
  • Semi-private: $125 small, $155 medium, $190 large, not offered extra large
  • Communal, no ashes returned: $95 small, $105 medium, $130 large, $175 extra large

Upgraded packages add an engraved wooden or photo urn and a memorial keepsake. The Remembrance package runs $285 to $375 truly private. The Loving Portrait photo urn package runs $340 to $425. The Beloved Companion brass urn with an ash pendant and frame runs $500 to $660.

Separate keepsakes: clay paw print in a clear case $35, paw print in a wooden frame $50, fur clipping $10.

Transport, the line most families miss:

  • Home pickup: $125 under 60 lbs, $225 over 60 lbs
  • After hours pickup: $250 under 60 lbs, $350 over 60 lbs
  • After hours facility drop off, by appointment: $85
  • Outside the 20 mile service area: add $100
  • Return by certified post with signature: $60
  • Hand delivery by a team member: $100

A realistic total for a medium dog, truly private, collected from home during business hours and posted back: $280 plus $125 plus $60, which is $465 before tax.

A strong fit if:

  • Families who want certainty that the ashes returned are their pet's, and want to be able to check
  • Families who cannot face a two or three week wait, since 72 hours is guaranteed
  • Families who want to witness the cremation or receive a recorded video of it
  • Families who would rather pay more for a genuinely private cremation than accept a shared chamber

Consider alternatives if:

  • Families outside the 21 locations, which covers only a small share of US metros
  • Families comparing on headline price alone, since pickup and return fees can add $185 or more
  • Owners of giant breeds, who are excluded from several packages and from semi-private entirely
  • Families who want in-home euthanasia and cremation from a single provider, which varies by franchise

We have not yet published a review of a comparable national cremation brand. Our Verdict

The pet cremation industry has a vocabulary problem, and most of the industry benefits from it. 'Individual' cremation sounds like your pet alone. Very often it is your pet in a chamber with several others, separated by metal dividers. Pet Passages could have used the comfortable word and charged the comfortable price. Instead it labels the tier 'Semi-Private (aka Individual)', explains the dividers in plain English on its own site, and offers 'Truly Private' at roughly double. That is the behavior of a company that expects to be checked.

Everything else follows from the same instinct: a numbered steel disc that stays with your pet, software you can log into, an open invitation to attend the cremation or watch a recording, and a 72 hour guarantee when everyone else says one to three weeks.

The catch is the pickup fee, and it is a big one. Advertised cremation prices are roughly half a realistic total once transport and return are added. Do the full arithmetic before you compare them to a local crematory that includes collection.

If there is a Pet Passages near you and the identity of the ashes is the thing keeping you up, this is the strongest answer to that specific worry that we have found. If you are shopping on price, a good independent crematory will usually beat them.
