Cremation and Memorial Jewelry

Memorial jewelry lets you carry a small part of your pet with you. Only a tiny amount of ashes is used, and the rest stays with you. Here is how it works and what to look for so the piece lasts.

Typical price: Most pieces run $50 to $200. Blown glass art infused with ashes ranges $150 to $450.

Buying guide

How it works. A jeweler seals a small pinch of ashes, or sometimes a lock of fur, inside a pendant, a bead, or a piece of glass. You send only a spoonful, so nothing irreplaceable leaves your hands in bulk.

The main types. A sealed pendant or urn necklace is the most common and the most affordable. Glass art suspends the ashes in color and is more of a keepsake object. Fingerprint or paw print jewelry casts a print rather than using ashes, which some families prefer.

What to ask before you buy. Confirm how much of the ashes the piece needs, how it is sealed, and whether the seal is permanent or refillable. Ask about the metal, since solid sterling silver or gold lasts far longer than plated pieces. Check the turnaround, which is often two to four weeks for ash pieces.

A note on keeping. If a piece is refillable rather than sealed, store it carefully. A permanently sealed setting is more secure for everyday wear.
